Northwest Missouri State University student and AdInk President Carlton Wilcoxson has been selected to the American Association for Advertising Agency’s Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP).

The 10-week, fully paid summer internship will help prepare Wilcoxson, a senior public relations major from Olivette, Mo., for a career in advertising.

“I’m honored to be selected,” Wilcoxson said. “So many people have in one way or another helped me get to this point, so I will represent Northwest with pride wherever I go.”

MAIP has offered the opportunity for college juniors, seniors and graduate students to expand their networks and work within a professional environment for more than 40 years. Since 1973, MAIP has allowed students to intern within 11 divisions of advertising, including art direction, copywriting, digital design and public relations. Last year, 114 students received the opportunity to expand their knowledge through MAIP.

Applicants were required to submit a resume, essay response, video response and two letters of recommendation. Some applicants were required to submit additional material including a portfolio demonstrating their work and responses to creative questions.

In addition to gaining hands-on experience in the area of his choice, Wilcoxson will have opportunities to attend workshops and seminars to further develop his skills in the advertising field.

Jacquie Lamer, instructor of mass media and AdInk advisor, recommended Wilcoxson for the internship program.

“Carlton is very deserving of this honor,” Lamer said. “For years he’s worked hard to navigate the vast advertising industry. He’s accomplished more as a student than a lot of working professionals manage. He used all of the resources his classes and AdInk had to offer to network with regional and national advertising professionals.”

Wilcoxson will learn the location of his internship this month. Agency partners are located in cities such as San Francisco, Denver and New York.

The American Association for Advertising Agency is the national trade association representing advertising agencies in the United States.
